After all, in every field and at every level you have to be recognized by *someone* that you are good at what you do. Otherwise, you are only doing it for yourself and you will never be hired. Not getting some recognition makes it difficult to cover the basics of life. But I think that Seth Godin and Ryan are trying to make is this: in a person's beginnings in a field, if money and fame are (or become) significant motivators that override the internal drive, that will negatively impact his/her ascent.
